Abstract
The relationship between reduction of mandibular residual ridge and the severity of osteoporosis in elderly edentulous male patients was investigated.24 patients were included in the study. The height of the mandibular residual ridge was measured by use of the mental foramen on panoramic radiographs. The presence and the severity of osteoporosis was determined with measurements from femur and lumbal spine by dual photon X-ray absorbsiometry (DPX). Laboratory analysis were performed to pati-ents. There were statistically significant correlation between total prosthesis usage period and height of the mandibular residual ridge (r = 0.62, sd = 0.247) (p < 0.05), osteoporosis of the lumbal spine and height of the mandibular residual ridge (r = -0.40, sd = 0.289) (p < 0.05). But there was no significant correlation between osteoporosis of femur neck and height of the mandibular residual ridge (r = -0.22). The blood analysis showed no significance. This study indicates a relationship between osteoporosis and reduction of mandibular ridge.

Bu çalışmada total protez kullanan erkek hastalardaki osteoporoz ve mandibular kret rezorbsiyonu (MKR) arasındaki ilişki araştırıldı. Çalışmaya 24 hasta kendi isteği ile katıldı. Osteoporoz değerlendirmek ve şiddetini belirlemek için lumbal vertebra ve femur başından dual foton x-ray absorpsiyometre (DPX) ile ölçümler yapıldı. Mandibular kretlerin yüksekliği Wical tekniği ile belirlendi. Bu amaçla mandibulada yer alan foramen mental'enin panoromik röntgenlerdeki görüntüsü rehber nokta olarak alındı. Bütün hastalarda kan tahlilleri yapılarak serum kalsiyum, serum fosfor ve total alkalen fosfataz değerleri tahlilleri yapıldı. Hastaların total protez kullanma süreleri ile MKR arasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı korelasyon (r = 0.62, sd= 0.247) bulunmuştur (p < 0.05). Femur başı kemik mineral içeriği (Bone mineral densiîy-BMD) değerleri ile MKR arasında korelasyon bulunmazken, lumbal vertebra BMD içeriği ile MKR arasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı (r = -0.40, sd = 0.289) korelasyon bulunmuştur (p < 0.05). Kan değerleri ile MKR arasında korelasyon tespit edilme-miştir. Elde edilen veriler student-t testi ve korelasyon önem kontrolü testi ile değerlendirildi. Bu çalışma erkek hastalardaki osteoporoz ile MKR arasında yakın bir ilişki olduğunu ortaya koymuştur.
