Abstract

In this study, the magnesite deposits in Sarıkavak (Mersin) region were evaluated through the geochemical perspectives. The XRD, major elements, trace elements and REE analyses were conducted on 4 samples taken from region. According to the XRD analyses, the mineral paragenesis of the Sarıkavak region is found as magnesite and dolomite. The average percentages of MgO, SİO2 and CaO values for the Sarıkavak magnesites were found %46.75, %0.30, and %1.64, respectively. According to the trace element analyses high Ni, Sr, Ba, Zn and Cu values were determined. The samples are characterized by magnesite + serpantinite and magnesite+quartz in accordance with the phase diagram of magnesite. Absence of talc suggest that the mineralisation was occurred in a solution that its' temperature was below 300 °C and CO2 percentage was lower than 4. Finally it is concluded that Sarıkavak magnesite deposites are in cyriptocristallen type that derived from the ultramafic rocks by weathering processes.
