Abstract

The ideas and strategies in the mainstream Knowledge Management literature is concerned with determining the types of organizational structures, tools and rewards that are most efficient in generating, distributing and sharing information in order to produce economic value. In this study, the knowledge/information management theory and organization theory are brought together in a dynamic organizational model in which the role of incentive and reward plans is examined. Organizations are defined in this model as a dynamic combination of three ideal-typical social coordination/interaction mechanisms. Knowledge and information are shared and distributed within and between organizations through hierarchy/authority, market/price, and community/trust mechanisms. How knowledge is produced and shared within these different mechanisms and what kind of rationality is accepted in these structures is described. This study argues that when reward and incentive systems are designed, decision makers should pay attention to these mechanisms so that managerial interventions could increase success and would not damage existing organizational dynamics which are essential for the creation, distribution and sharing of information.
