Abstract

A simplified trim calculation procedure coupled with a nonlinear partial differential equation (PDE) solver is developed for calculating the elastic response of rotor blades with trailing edge flap controls. New aerodynamic environment due to the proposed control inputs introduced as trailing edge flap motions is formulated based on Theodorsen’s two-dimensional quasisteady oscillating airfoil aerodynamics. A conditionally stable explicit finite difference scheme is utilized for numerically integrating the set of nonlinear P.D.E. representing elastic deflections and rigid motions of hingeless rotor blades both in space and time. Periodic blade responses for steady state forward flight conditions controlled with trailing edge flaps motions are calculated by the introduced methodology. Results are presented for two different cases of flap controlled rotor configurations for comparison and analysing the general characteristics of the flap controlled rotor systems. Some recent innovative rotor designs related to this concept has also been reviewed within the framework of this paper.
