Abstract

The random variation of renewable energy sources depending on climatic conditions causes detrimental effects on the power frequency balance of the traditional grid system. In this study, the ramps seen in wind power plants (WPP) generations are analyzed. In addition, an optimization model has been proposed that determines the plant distribution to minimize ramp events in new plants by taking into account the ramp events seen in existing plant generations of Turkey. This proposed model has been solved using the Genetic Algorithm (GA). The results are evaluated by taking into account the areas below the histogram curves obtained from percentage ramp values. As a result of these assessments, it is observed that the current RES facilities in the country have histogram areas of 16.61, 41.32 and 59.94 in 2017, and in 2018 these values are 18.10, 40.49 and 63.52 respectively. In the WPP spatial distribution obtained by the solution of the proposed optimization method, it is observed that 1, 3 and 6 hour percentage ramp values have 9.98, 23.65 and 30.97 areas, respectively in 2017, and in 2018 these values are 11.01, 25.65 and 39.14 respectively. In new plant installations, it is envisaged that if the distribution of the plant cluster to the regions obtained by the method proposed in this study is taken into account, the ramp events will be minimized.
