Abstract

Spindle cell squamous carcinoma (sarcomatoid carcinoma), is a rare, aggressive variant of squamous cell carcinoma most frequently found in the head and neck region. It is commonly encountered in patients who have undergone radiation therapy in this region. Sar¬comatoid carcinoma has a biphasic character and consists of sarcomatoid proliferation of pleomorphic spindle cells and squamous cell carcinoma. Histogenetic origin and morphologic classification of this tumor is still controversial. Sarcomatoid carcinoma is an entity which is difficult to be diagnosed only on light microscopic level. The differential diagnosis from sarcomas is especially important. We report a spindle cell squamous carcinoma from mandibulary gingiva and try to point the importance of the differential diagnosis of these lesions.
