Abstract

The economic crises may permanently affect unemployment rates, and in turn, these rates may rise compared to pre-crisis as a result of the hysteresis effect. In the 2000s, the unemployment rate in Turkey began to be double-digit and high unemployment became one of the main economic problems. This study aims to examine changes in unemployment rate by gender and marital status in Turkey due to the global crisis of 2008. The study analyzes four different unemployment rates: single male, married male, single female, married female. The Fourier KPSS stationary test developed by Becker, Enders and Lee (2006) was used to determine whether the unemployment rates were permanent. Monthly unemployment rates between 2005 and 2014 were used for the analysis. According to the findings, single male and married female unemployment rates were not stationary, and these series had unemployment hysteresis. Married male and single female series were stationary. The findings reveal that gender and marital status should be considered when implementing policies to reduce unemployment rates.
