Abstract

The paper reports the results of an experimental study on investigation of the effects of mineral admixtures on the bond characteristics between concrete and reinforcement. In addition to concrete mixture with only Portland cement, concrete mixture with 15% of fly ash and 10% of silica fume replaced with cement by weight were prepared and cured in standard curing conditions at 20±2 °C for periods of 3, 7, 14 and 28 days. The specimens prepared were tested for compressive and bond strength. The results showed that concretes with silica fume yielded the highest compressive and bond strengths. The strength development of concretes with fly ash seemed to be quite slow for a period of up to 3 days. However, it is remarkably speeded up for the rest of the curing period. Round steel rebar showed lower bond strength with respect to ribbed bar.
