Abstract

It is important for individuals who live in cities near the sea to understand the interaction between sea and city. Since Istanbul is a city where sea and city interaction is heavily encountered, it is crucial for the students who live in İstanbul to experience this interaction from different perspectives. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of science and arts activities that were developed for the project, entitled “The Children of the Bosphorus Explore the City Through Sea” funded by TUBITAK 4004 - Environmental Education and Science School, on students’ attitudes towards and perceptions of sea, city, science and environment. Participants consisted of 5th through 8th grade students attending Science and Art Centers in Istanbul. In the years 2016 and 2017, a total of 78 28 and 50, respectively gifted and talented students participated in the study. The activities were selected from different disciplines and developed around the theme of “sea and city”. First of all, participants’ experiences about the sea and city were measured by The Sea and the City Experience Questionnaire. In order to measure the participants’ attitudes towards the sea and the city interaction, The Sea, City, Science and Environment Attitude Scale was administered before and after the implementation. In addition, in the beginning and at the end of the implementation, participants’ perceptions regarding the sea and the city interactions were measured by The Sea and the City Interactions Perceptions Questionnaire which included four openended questions and adapted by the researchers. Finally, participants’ views about the implementation were collected by The Sea and the City Evaluation Form which consisted of nine open-ended questions, given at the end of the implementation. Findings of the study suggested that participants’ attitudes towards sea and city interaction and their perceptions about the problems related with it increased in both years. Based on participants’ self-reports, their communication skills and self-esteem on the topics of the project theme improved
