Abstract

This article aims to examine the origins of the relationship between music and politics, a relationship tackled by contemporary philosophers. In this vein, first, Aristotle’s distinction between noise, sound, voice, and music will be discussed and it will be shown that basing music on sound is not a necessity. One mustbear in mind thisdistinction offered by Aristotle since it serves to clarify themainassertion of this article,i.e.,Plato subjugates all the audibles to voice/word (logos). According to Plato, musicshould be the main component of education, which is the foundation of the Platonic state, due to its positive effects. However, Plato alsothinks that music should be limited due to its intrinsic negative effects and it should be governed bylogosto avoid the deviance it might cause. And then, why and how Plato aims to govern music will be thoroughly investigated throughhisbooksRepublicandLaws. Thereafter, the views of Theodor W. Adorno and John Cage as alternatives to the Platonic conception of music will be investigatedand thepossibility of noise-based music as a new form of music instead of sound-based music (or instead of sound-subjugated-to-voice-based music) will be discussed.

Özet

Bu makale, çağdaş filozoflarca ele alınanmüzik vepolitika ilişkisininkökenlerini incelemeyi hedeflemektedir.Bu doğrultuda, öncelikle Aristoteles’te gürültü, ses, söz ve müzik ayrımına değinilecekve müziğin ses üzerine inşa edilmesininbirzorunlulukolmadığı gösterilmeye çalışılacaktır.Aristoteles’in yaptığı bu ayrımı göz önünde bulundurmak makalenin temel tartışmasıolan Platon’un sözü diğer işitilenler karşısında egemen kılma girişimini açık kılabilmekaçısından önemlidir.Platon’a göre müzik sunduğu kimi olumlu etkilerden dolayı Platoncu devletin temelini oluşturan eğitimin başat unsuru olmalıdır.
