Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of computer-based 3D ma- terials to overcome students’ misconceptions related to atomic structure and orbitals topics. The sample of this study consists of 145 (Experimental group=72; Control group=73) freshman students enrolled department of science education. The atomic structure and orbitals was taught to the experimental group through computer as- sisted instruction using three-dimensional pictures, animations and simulations de- veloped by 3D Max 9. Additionally, students in the experimental group practice in the computer laboratory every lesson. Students in the control group were instructed with traditional instruction. As a data collection tool a questionnaire consisting of open-ended questions related to atomic structure and orbitals was used. The findings showed that students have misconceptions related to atomic structure and orbitals. After the instruction, the obtained data revealed that computer assisted instruction more effective method than traditional method to overcome students’ misconcep- tions.
