Abstract

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is defined as the persistent inability to achieve or maintain penile erection sufficient for satisfactory sexual performance. In epidemiological studies smoking, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, hypercholesterolemia, obesity and sedentary lifestyle are mentioned as important risk factors of ED. Endothelial dsyfunction plays an important role in the pathophysiology of developing ED. Endothelial dysfunction is an earlier state of vascular damage that may cause the loss of vasodilatation depending on normal endothelium and significant atherosclerotic changes in systemic circulation. MS has become increasingly important in the last century and it is one of the important reasons of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. MS includes the common risk factors of developing endothelial dysfunction that cause cardiovascular disease and ED. In this study the current situation between the pathophysiology of MS and ED is presented.
