Abstract

The notion of the commons, which Marx discussed under the title of "primitive accumulation" in relation to the enclosures, which took place in England from late middle ages to the 18th century, has received a central political and social significance due to the return of enclosures in the post 1980 neoliberal era. The new enclosure operation of capital aims at privatizing different forms of commons, from land, water and forest to public services and human genome. The model of "accumulation by dispossession", which became a hegemonic form of capital accumulation in Turkey following the 2001 crisis, depends on the enclosure of urban commons. This process engenders urban social movements aiming at the reclamation of old commons as well as the creation of new commons. This article considers the limits and potentials of such movements by discussing the struggle of Emek Movie Theatre which resists the commodification of collective symbolic capital produced in urban everyday life.
