Abstract

This study addresses the increasing visibility of differences within the working class in the neoliberal period on a terrain distinct from widespread readings that claim the dissolution of class. Its point of departure is Marx's analysis of labor power and its value: as a commodity, the value of labor power equals the value of the basket of means of subsistence necessary for its reproduction. The study shows that the basket is not a fixed and natural magnitude; its scope and composition are determined historically and socially. The thesis of the study is that the material source of intra-class differences is the differentiation of the basket of necessary means of subsistence according to types of labor power within the capitalist mode of production. Capital attributes a specific reproduction norm to each type of labor power according to the qualities required by its valorization process; this mechanism operates as a specialized form of relative surplus value in the sphere of the reproduction of labor power. Part of the reproduction costs is transferred to the state and part to the household, especially to women's unpaid labor; where wages fail to cover the basket, the gap is closed through indebtedness. The mechanism is concretized through contemporary examples from the Turkish social formation, such as the appearance requirements of aesthetic labor, platform courier work, and household reproduction sustained through debt. Methodologically, the study follows a historical materialist analysis proceeding from the general to the concrete; it remains at a theoretical-analytical level and draws on the findings of existing empirical research. It concludes that knowledge of differences does not eliminate the possibility of working-class unity but rather shows the material conditions under which such unity can be established.
