Abstract

Current studies proved that risk factors for atherosclerosis exist in children and adolescents and atheromatous changes of the vessel wall are initiated in early ages. Obesity which is an enhancing problem of childhood increases lipid alterations as well as the risk of atherosclerosis. The aim of this study is to detect if there is a difference in lipid profile and atherosclerotic determinants of obese and nonobese children and to evaluate the relationship of body weight parameters with lipid levels and atherosclerotic determinants. The study consisted of 22 obese, 89 nonobese children. Weight and height of these children were measured. Body mass index and relative weight were calculated. Blood was withdrawn following a 12 hour fasting period to determine the lipid profile, Apo A1, Apo B and Lp(a) levels. Trigliseride levels were significantly higher in the obese children when compared to the nonobese ones (p=0.00) while Apo A-1 and Apo B-1 levels were significantly higher in the nonobese group (p
