Abstract

Significant alterations in serum calcium concentration occur during the neonatal period. It is important to evaluate these alterations in light of the normal dynamic changes that take place during extrauterine transition. We aimed to determine the changes in calcium concentration during the first week after delivery in healthy term newborns and to investigate the effects of supplementery calcium during pregnancy on calcium regulation of the neonate. Calcium, phosphorus, magnesium and parathyroid hormon (PTH) levels were determined in blood specimens drawn from umblical cord of 48 healthy newborn babies and from the same babies on the second and seventh days after delivery. Two groups were formed. Mothers in the first group had received suplementary calcium during pregnancy and those in the second group had not. Calcium levels on the second day were significantly lower than levels at birth (p< 0.01) and on the seventh day (p< 0.05). Parathyroid hormon levels in cord blood were significantly low compared to those on the second and seventh days (p< 0.001). There was not any significant difference between babies of supplementary calcium receiving and nonreceiving mothers in terms of calcium, phosphorus, magnesium and parathyroid levels. These results suggest that calcium regulation during fetal life is related to factors other than PTH and changes in calcium levels are related to PTH during perinatal period.
