Abstract

Immune thrombocytopenic purpura is the most frequent cause of childhood thrombocytopenia. It is an autoimmune disease characterized by skin and mucosal bleeding as a result of increased platelet destruction due to antiplatelet antibodies in the plasma. In this study, 12 patients diagnosed as acute immune thrombocytopenic purpura, are retrospectively evaluated in terms of their ages, etiologies, laboratory findings and treatment methods. The ages of the patients were between 1-12 months (mean 5,21±2,8 month). Mean platelet count at the time of diagnosis was 15333 ±11499 /mm3. Five cases (41,6%) had an infection history and two (40%) of them was infected with cytomegalovirus. Two of the cases (16,6%) had a vaccination history. Six cases (50%) were treated with intravenous immumnogiobubin, and 4 cases (34%) were treated with high dose methylprednisonolone. In two of the patients (16,6%) spontaneous remission was observed. Immune thrombocytopenic purpura in infancy was retrospectively evaluated in this study. Vaccination should be kept inmind in the etiology of immune thrombocytopenic purpura besides infections.
