Abstract

Poisoning is among the most frequent preventable causes of mortality and morbidity in childhood. We evaluated 11 patients aged between 5 to 12 months, who are admitted to Zeynep Kamil Education Hospital between January 200 1- February 2006 retrospectively. The oral route was used in all cases. The non-pharmacological agents such as glue, acetone, face powder and corosive agents were responsible for the poisoning in 7 (63.6 %) cases, while medications such as glipizide and antibiotics were the responsible in 4 (36.4 %) cases. The prevention of children from poisoning must be our main target. Therefore, drugs should be kept away from children and, the shape and colors of medications should not resemble candies.
