Abstract

Malondialdehyde (MDA) is known as a biochemical indicator of an oxidative injury of the tissues. Perinatal period is an important time influencing whole human being life. The aim of the present study was to investigate the association between cord blood MDA concentrations and some of the perinatal factors. The blood samples were obtained from 150 randomly selected neonates with normal postnatal history. The cord blood MDA levels of the neonates with one- and five-minute Apgar scores less than seven were significantly higher than those equal to or higher than seven. In addition, significant negative correlations were identified between MDA plasma levels and one- and five-minute Apgar scores. In addition, premature babies, infants with low birth weight, babies born by a Cesarean section, those with premature rupture of membranes and with presentation abnormalities were found to have significantly elevated MDA levels. However, no relationships were identified between sex, maternal age, number of previous pregnancies, presence of a nuchal cord or meconium-stained amniotic fluid and MDA levels. These findings indicate that cord blood MDA level is an important biochemical marker of perinatal events in newborns. Future studies are needed whether cord blood MDA levers could predict short and long term prognosis of perinatal events in neonates.
