Abstract

Turkey has recorded high growth rates during lasttwo decades that have led to a structural change inthe income level of the provinces. This shift arises tothe question of whether the regional disparities inTurkey converge or diverge. The growth performanceof Turkey has also led to change the structure of theeconomy which results in the move from rural areasto urban areas. The empirical examination of theincome convergence in Turkey thereby seems to betimely and important in order to provide insights foranalyzing the causes and consequences of regionaldisparities and connecting a link between economicgrowth and urbanization. We collect the per capitaincome data of 73 provinces during the period 1992-2013 and estimate different econometric models bycontrolling for structural changes in the income. Theresults overall provide an evidence on the incomedivergence between the east and west of Turkey. We discuss why Turkish urbanization which is intandem with economic development process is nota stand-alone for the convergence and discoverthat the region-specific structural characteristics(the geographical conditions, the terrorist incidents, the regional investment policies, and the horizontalimbalances) seem to be still prevailing.
