Abstract

Between September 1997 and August 1999, 378 of 447 infants who were born at Pamukkale University Hospital and followed in the newborn Unit were also examined by the Medical Genetics unit for congenital malformations. In 17 cases (4.5%) single major, in 16 cases (4.2%), single minor and in five cases (1.3%) multiple malformations were detected. Association of the following the congenital malformations was investigated: age of the mother, educational status, consanguinity, sex of the child, abnormal clinical and laboratory findings during" the last pregnancy, presence of malformed child from a former pregnancy, abortion, stillbirth, and infantile death. Although the number of births in our hospital and the number of cases in our study are very low, the results have shown that congenital malformations were more frequent in male infants, and in mothers younger than 18 years of age, with low educational status, with a of history excessive number of pregnancies, and multiple abortions, and with abnormal clinical and laboratory findings during pregnancy.
