Abstract

Approximately 15 % of 5-year-old children have primary nocturnal enuresis, having never achieved a period of continent nights. Approximately 15 % of children with enuresis resolve their symptoms each year. This rate is the gold standart against which all treatment regimes must be compared. These data, however, do not support a nontreatment approach, for two reasons. First, the anxiety of the adolescent may increase, identity formation and socialization may be adversely affected and pscyhosocial maturation may not be completed, while spontaneous cure is awaited. Second, spontaneous resolution does not come to all who wait. Approximately 1 % to 2 % of the adult population suffers persistent enuresis. Enuresis that continues into the adolescent years is usually difficult to treat. The best treatment regimen cannot be designed until a careful evaluation has been made and the fullest possible understanding of etiologic possibilities achieved.
