Abstract

The basis of inquiry is to ask questions. In inquiry-based science classes, teachers raise questions to their stu dents. This study aimed to find out what kind of questions the teachers ask, for what purpose, and what kind of questions support the inquiry-based learning. The study was conducted with 36 science teachers with various demographic characteristics. Descriptive analysis method was used in the analysis of the answers given to three open-ended questions by teachers. The results revealed that the most frequent question types asked by teaches in inquiry-based classrooms are open-ended questions and multiple answer questions. As for the pur pose of questioning, their most frequent answers are making measurement and evaluation and assessing the students’ prior knowledge. In the third question, the science teachers answered that “why questions” and “the questions about problem determination and solution” are the most effective questions in inquiry-based sup port. Science teachers should be informed with effective practices to ask effective questions in inquiry-based classrooms.
