Abstract

Background: The thyroid gland contains mechanisms for Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) production. Deficiency in antioxidant enzymes may lead to accumulation of ROS that can be result in initiation of carcinogenesis in thyroid gland. Therefore, we investigated the activity of erythrocyte Glutathione Peroxidase (GSH-Px) and the level of end product of lipid peroxidation, which is malondialdehyde (MDA) in thyroid cancer patients. Methods: Activity of GSH-Px and the level of end product of lipid peroxidation, which is MDA, were studied in erythrocytes of 46 patients with thyroid cancer and 50 healthy controls. Results: Erythrocyte GSH-Px activities were found lower whereas erythrocyte MDA levels higher in patients with thyroid cancer compared with those of controls. It has been found that there was a negative correlation between erythrocyte GSH-Px activity and lipid peroxidation in thyroid cancer patients. Conclusion: These results suggest that erythrocyte antioxidant enzyme system was significantly impaired while erythrocyte lipid peroxidation was increased in thyroid cancer patients.
