Abstract

This study is based on a mutual correspondence between Suat Hayri Ürgüplü, 11th Prime Minister of the Republic of Turkey with George Brown, Chief Secretary of the State Minister of Economic Affairs of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in 1965. In the referred letters, there is a general revival of the Cyprus case during the Republican period in Cyprus and aid to the island. The letters address various issues concerning the assistance to the island. Among these problems, Britain's aid to Cyprus does not reach the Turkish Cypriots, the US government is preventing the Turkish Cypriot aid to the Turkish Cypriots; There are issues such as the US tolerance for the military aid of the Greek Government to the Greek Cypriots. In addition to the aid, it is seen in the letters that the situation of Turkish Cypriots and economic conditions on the island in the aftermath of the events of December 21, 1963, the possibility of the island becoming “a second Cuba” after the Soviet Union took care of the candidate and the solution of the Cyprus problem. In this sense, the post-1963 period, when the peak of the Cyprus problem, the island's last communication between the two guarantor states that the senior executives of the Republic of Turkey and the UK has shed new light on the history of Cyprus. Also, before this correspondence, Suat Hayri Ürgüplü's involvement and experience with the Cyprus problem is included in the study
