Abstract

Objective: Viral hepatitis has become a silent epidemicworldwide. The aim of the present study is to determinethe knowledge and awareness of Hepatitis B infectionamongst patients who refer to our clinic and theirrelatives.Materials and Methods: Two hundred and forty-fourpatients randomly selected among patients admitted toour clinic were included this study and data aboutawareness of Hepatitis were obtained. Then, hepatitiscondition of the patients was determined by the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and the obtaineddata were compared. Results: Seventy-two patients had hepatitis B surfaceantibody (+) (anti-HBs (+)). 25 patients had receivedthree doses of the hepatitis B vaccine and 47 patientswere unaware of their anti-HBs (+) status. 14 patientswere Hepatitis B surface antigen (+) (HBsAg (+)). 11patients had known HBsAg (+) and 3 patients wereunaware of their condition. Conclusion: Three patients with HBsAg (+) were notaware of their disease and this is a risk factor for oursociety. Therefore, Necessary tests for the infectiousdiseases should be applied to all patients admitted to theclinic.
