Abstract

The city of Prusias ad Hypium once located in the region called Bithynia in ancient times is now within the borders of Düzce province, in the Western Black Sea Region. Prusias ad Hypium was one of the important settle- ments of the Kingdom of Bithynia in the Hellenistic Period. From the Roman Imperial Period, the city gained a prosperous reputation due to its important architectural structures. The subject of this study is the ceramic find- ings. Mainly Pontic sigillata, found in the excavations carried out in 2020 in one of the prominent structures of the city: the theater. The ceramics included in the study are evaluated typologically and chronologically in the light of excavation data and parallel samples. Excavations in the city of Prusias ad Hypium are one of the few carried out in the Western Black Sea Region, therefore academic introduction and evaluation of the ceramics is crucial for our mission on sharing the first scientific data on the subject and as well as contributing to the local archeology. Pontic sigillata which are dated to 1st-3rd century AD, provides notable data on the imported tableware and thus on the ceramic tradition of the city. Furthermore, this archeological data, by providing evidence about the existence of commercial relations in the south of the Black Sea Basin is essential for the study of the region’s history.

Özet

Günümüzde Batı Karadeniz Bölgesi’nde Düzce ili sınırları içinde bulunan Prusias ad Hypium kenti, antik dönemde Bithynia olarak adlandırılan bölgede yer almaktadır. Prusias ad Hypium, Hellenistik Dönem’de Bithynia Krallığının önemli yerleşimlerinden biri olup, Roma İmparatorluk Dönemi’nden itibaren de zen- ginleşmeye başlayarak önemli mimari yapıların inşa edildiği bir kent haline gelmektedir. Bu çalışmanın konusunu, kentin ön plana çıkan yapılarından biri olan tiyatroda 2020 yılında gerçekleştirilen kazılarda bulunan ve ağırlıklı olarak Pontica sigillatalarından oluşan seramik buluntuları oluşturmakta; çalışma kap- samına alınan seramikler, kazı verileri ve paralel örnekler ışığında tipolojik ve kronolojik açıdan değerlendi- rilmektedir. Batı Karadeniz Bölgesi’nde az sayıda yürütülen kazılardan biri olan Prusias ad Hypium kentin- den ele geçen söz konusu seramiklerin tanıtılması ve değerlendirilmesiyle; konuyla ilgili ilk bilimsel verilerin paylaşılması ve bölge arkeolojisine katkı sağlanması amaçlanmaktadır. Kentin, kaliteli ithal sofra kaplarına ve dolayısıyla seramik geleneğine ilişkin veriler sunan Pontica Sigillatalarının MS 1.-3. yüzyıl arasına tarih- lenen örnekleri, Karadeniz Havzası’nın güneyindeki durumuna ve sözü geçen havzadaki ticari ilişkilerin varlığına kanıt oluşturması bakımından önem kazanmaktadır
