Abstract

The superior vena cava syndrome (SVCS) is usually associated with advanced malignancy. Although radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy are recommended as first step for the treatment of malignity-related SVCS, use of endovascular treatment methods recently more important strategy since it leads to disappearance of symptoms in a short time and increase in life quality. The aim of this study was to evaluate the endovascular treatment of superior vena cava obstruction secondary to malignant disease among twelve patients who were diagnosed at Medical Oncology, Thorax Disease and Radiology Departments of Uludağ University Medical Faculty. The diagnosis of malignancy was small cell lung carcinoma (n:4), non small cell lung carcinoma (n:7) and mesothelioma (n:l). Self expandable nitinol type stents were used in all patients. The evaluation of the symptoms before and after the procedure was assessed according to Kishi's score. The mean Kishi's score decreased from 5.67+1.23 to 1.33±0.88 and the difference was statistically sig¬nificant (p

Özet

Vena kava superior sendromu (VKSS), genellikle ileri dönemdeki malign hastalıklara bağlı olarak gelişir. Maligniteye bağlı VKSS tedavisinde ilk basamak olarak radyoterapi ve/veya kemoterapi önerilmekle beraber semptom¬ları kısa zamanda gidermesi ve hayat kalitesini hızla düzeltmesi nedeniyle endovasküler tedavi yöntemleri giderek güncellik kazanmaktadır. Çalışmamıza Uludağ Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Medikal Onkoloji ve Göğüs Hastalıkları Anabilim Dalı'na başvuran ve tanı aldıktan sonra Radyoloji Bilim Dalı'na yönlendirilen VKSS tanılı 12 hastada endovasküler tedavi sonuçları değerlendirildi. Histopatolojik inceleme sonucu hastaların 4'ü küçük hücreli akciğer kanseri, 7'si küçük hücreli olmayan akciğer kanseri, l'i mezotelyoma idi.
