Abstract

The choice of suitable treatment for subacromial impingement syndrome having multiple etiologies is difficult. Conservative management and rehabilitation programmes related to subacromial decompression are effective. Between January 2002-December 2003, 40 patients (24 women, 16 men, mean age 42 years, range 38-51) with subacromial impingement syndrome were treated conservatively at Departments of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Bursa SSK Hospital. The mean follow-up time in the study group was 18 months (range 6-24). The treatment consisted of patient education, disappearance of pain and inflammation was to achieve subacromial decompression as well as normal flexibility and dynamic stability of shoulder. While the applied rehabilitation programme gave rise to succesfull results in 27 (67.5%) patients, it did not in the rest 13 (32.5%) (the mean Constant score; before treatment 52, after treatment 88, p
