Abstract

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to evaluate the accuracy of the transvaginal sonography for the diagnosis of adenomyosis in our clinic and to compare to the literature. MATERIALS-METHODS: One hundred patients who underwent hysterectomy for benign pathology and diagnosed as adenomyosis in their histopathological evaluation were involved in this study. Transvaginal ultrasonographic reports were evaluated retrospectively and compared with the histopathological diagnosis as the gold standart. RESULTS: The patients’ age ranged from 38-75 years (mean age 48±2.4 years). Thirtyseven patients were reported as ademyozis while 53 diagnosed as myoma uteri and adenomyozis. The exact accurancy of transvaginal ultrasonography and histopathological evaluation for adenomyozis and adenomyozis +myoma uteri diagnosis were 62% and 25% respectively. CONCLUSION: Transvaginal ultrasonography can be used in the diagnosis of adenomyosis. However the accuracy of diagnosis decrease by associated disorders especially with leiomyoma.
