Abstract

Musluçeşme, which is located at the eastern part of the Marmara Sea, has known as one of the Aceramic Neolithic sites in Western Anatolia. Between the years 2017-2019, an intensive survey was carried out to re-explore and re-evaluate Musluşeçme and its surrounding area. The preliminary results of the project have shown that the inhabitants of the site settling area was expanded over time, related to the relocations of inhabitants. Nevertheless, estimating the duration of occupation is difficult for the moment. Chipped stone assemblage reflects prominently a flake industry that is mostly based on multi-platform cores shaped from local flints stones. Whilst the lack of information about the Mesolithic and Aceramic Neolithic communities of the region makes the MesolithicNeolithic differentiation difficult. Differences between the regional Pottery Neolithic chipped stone traditions and Musluçeşme industry and very limited distribution of the less amount of nondiagnostic prehistoric-like pottery sherds enables us to date the area earlier than Pottery Neolithic. The nonhomogenous distributions of the chipped stones along the 4-5 km distanced field to Musluçeşme proofs the active use of the area by inhabitants. Apart from the Neolithic, Paleolithic Age also has been encountered in the region during the researches. A Middle Paleolithic location was documented at one of the hills on the boundary of Karacabey Plain, which is named as Çakmaktepe. Both the significant density of the findings and the local flint sources are suggesting that Çakmaktepe might have been used as a Paleolithic workshop.
