Abstract

Experimental candidiasis was performed via differenl routes in guinea pigs immunosuppressed with cylophos-phamide and dexamelhasone by adminislraling C. albicans ATCC 26555 serolype A slrain. Three experimenlal groups were consli-tuted by adminislraling agenl Ihrough inlravenous (Group 1, n:12), inlraperiloneal (Group 2, n:12) and oral (group 3, n:12) routes. Four guinea pigs for each group were used lo set up conlrol (Group 4, n:12) and physiologic saline solution was injected same routes as experimenlal groups. The guinea pigs have died in Group 1 and Group 2, at Ihe percenl of 58,3 % and 41,6 %, respectively. However, mortality was nol observed in Group 3. The lesions were differenl in location depending on the inoculation routes. Macroscopically, mullifocal gray to white foci were observed intensively in Ihe lung, liver, heart, spleen and kidney in Group 1. In Group 2, the macroscopical lesions were generally seen in the abdominal cavity organs and testicles. However, in Group 3, Ihe lesions were observed usually on Ihe upper digestive iracls. Microscopically, systemic infection characterized by pyogranulomalous lesions was observed in Group 1 and Group 2. In addition Ihe similar lesions were seen in Ihe testicles of Group 2. In Group 3, local infec-tion characterized by hyperkeratosis of the squamous epithelium and ulcers covered with pseudomembranes was occurred. Hislochemically, blaslospores, pseudohyphae and hyphae were seen in the all lesions.
