Abstract

This paper examines the economic consequences of downsizing. A literature review provides a widespread perspective to the effects of downsizing on both micro and macro scales. A wide range of literature, which encompasses share price reactions, and operational performances reveales that these two indicators are closely related with downsizing, how it is managed and how the market interprets downsizing. Although various surveys differ in results, they signify a decline in share prices and operational performance following downsizing. On the macro level, unemployment caused by layoffs in the process of downsizing has been investigated. Evidence shows that unemployment rate and layoffs depict a parallel tendency. Both its macro-economical and social consequences are worth studying further.
