Abstract

AbstractInvestigation of Cryptosporidium Parvum by ELISA and Modified Ehrlich-Ziehl-Neelsen Stain Methods in Patients With Diarrhea Objective: Cryptosporidium spp are important agents causing diarrhea in developing and developed countries. The agent causes severe life-threatening diarrhea especially in immunocompromised hosts. Furthermore, transmission of Cryptosporidium parvum by of drinking water threats public health. The aim of this study was to compare the two methods used in determining Cryptosporidium parvum. Method: In this study 92 diarrheic stool specimens from inhabitants of Malatya Rest Home and patients with diarrhea applied to Inonu University Turgut Ozal Medical Center in Malatya are investigated for Cryptosporidium parvum copro-antigens by Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) and oocysts via modified Ehrlich-Ziehl-Neelsen (m-EZN) staining and both methods are compared statistically. Results: Five specimens are found to be positive by both ELISA and m-EZN. The sensivity and spesifity of ELISA was 100% in this study. Conclusion: m-EZN staining method can be used especially in immuncompromised patients with diarrhea as it is a rapid, cost-effective and easily applicable method for routinely diagnosis of Cryptosporidium parvum.
