Abstract

Turks, who has the perception of life after death, attributed (assigned) great sa- credness to burial and post burial rites as the reflection of this belief. It is believed that the soul of the late ancestor also lives after death, it continued the relations with the society, the spiritual existence of the ancestor left on the earth affect the lives of the survivors. Turks built great tombs for the personages they know as their an- cestors and considered the representative (symbolic) caves as the cemetery plots of their ancestors. According to the available evidences, it is expressed that some troops acted as a guard to protect the cairns of the personages, that the number of the troops were determined according to the status of the person in the cairn and that their duties were to protect the cairns from all kinds of attacks. It is well known that the Sultans themselves presented the duty of tomb- keeping to the people and fulfilled this ser- vice in the course of their duties. In this article, the meaning attributed to the concept of tomb-keeping, the spiritual sign of their commencing service, the duties of the tomb-keepers, the public perspective on these people, their relations with these places and the list of some tombkeepers have been given. The tomb-keepers who are considered as the spiritual guards of the tradition of shrine and entombed saints appeared throughout the Anatolia are attached to these places with the bonds of love. In this study, the topic of tombkeeping treated so far in terms of the visit phenomenon has been examined with the perspective of ethnology and evaluated.
