Abstract

The intense urbanization and industrialization and the resulting traffic intensity, mining and industrial activities cause irreversible pollution to urban soils. Children playgrounds in the city center are greatly affected by this pollution. A significant part of this pollution created by heavy metals which are toxic to humans. Children are the group that spend the most time in these areas and they are most affected by this pollution. In this study, the heavy metal contents of the soils in the children playgrounds in Kütahya were examined. Soil samples were collected from 19 children playgrounds located in Kütahya city center residential area. The samples were taken from 0-10 cm depth of the topsoil and As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb and Zn analyses of heavy metals were conducted. Aqua regia (A.R.) was used for solutions and the final analyses were performed by ICP-MS method. Heavy metal concentrations in topsoils vary between 9.60 to 260.90 mg/kg for As, 0.07 to 1.24 mg/kg for Cd, 16.10 to 55.50 mg/kg for Cr, 9.13 to 65.23 mg/kg for Cu, 0.02 to 0.60 mg/kg for Hg, 24.70 to 121.30 mg/kg for Ni, 13.06 to 113.60 mg/kg for Pb and 28.70 to 252.90 mg/kg for Zn, respectively. Enrichment Factor (EF), Geoaccumulation Index (Igeo), Contamination Factor (CF) and Pollution Load Index (PLI) have been calculated to evaluate heavy metal pollution in the topsoils. In particular, the contents of heavy metals such as As, Cd, Hg, Ni, Pb and Zn have been found to be high enough to cause danger in the children playgrounds.
