Abstract

Hydatid cyst, caused by infection with a larval stage of Echinococcus granulosus, is a serious public health problem in the world, especially affecting Africa and Middle East Countries. Adult worms mature in the intestine of the dog and the eggs are released in the feces. Humans become infected when they swallow eggs in contaminated food and hydatid cysts form in organs like liver, lungs, brain, heart, bones, skeletal muscles, kidney, spleen, and other tissues. Clinical findings of hydatic cyst depend on the location and diameter of the cyst. Many hydatic cysts remain undefined and are diagnosed incidentally. Autopsy reports of medico-legal autopsies performed in the Morgue Specialization Department of the Council of Forensic Medicine between the years 1999-2005 are reviewed for this study. Sixteen histopathologically confirmed hydatic cyst cases are discussed according to age, gender, location, macroscopically findings and cause of death.
