Abstract

OBJECTIVE: C-reactive protein (CRP) appears in serum associated with many different types of inflammation and in response to a variety of stimuli. These are related to bacterial infection; malignant neoplasms, particularly when associated with tissue necrosis; physical or traumatic injury and many inflammatory clinical conditions. Possibility of CRP in forensic application was originally proposed by outstanding authors. In current study, serum CRP concentration were investigated in forensic autopsy cases of various causes of death, with special reference to the survival time and cause of death in traumatic death and we discussed possibility of its application in forensic diagnosis. METHODS: Cases selected from routine necropsies performed in the Council of Forensic Medicine, Istanbul. Samples were obtained from 104 deceased, where exact postmortem interval (PMI) was known. Serum CRP concentration was assayed by using Cobra Integra 400 Analyser. Blood samples were collected from femoral vein.RESULTS: Serum CRP concentration of total cases ranged from 0.01 to 477.16 mg/l (median, 4.73 mg/l). Statistically significant difference was found between mode of death and titration alterations of CPR (p
