Abstract

OBJECTIVE: The main objective of the study was to determine of cord blood hemoglobin, ferrous and ferritin levels in newborns who have risk of fetal hypoxia or uteroplacental insufficiency.METHODS: 72 pregnant women who delivered in our hospital and their newborns were included the study. All cases were divided into two groups. Group 1 was included 24 complicated pregnancies preeclampsia, gestational diabetes and intrauterine growth retardation and their newborns. Group 2 was included 48 healthy pregnant women and their newborns. Hemoglobin, serum ferrous level and serum ferritin level in cord blood were tested for two groups after delivery. RESULTS: In Group 1, cord blood hemoglobin level was significantly higher while ferrous and ferritin levels were significantly lower than Group 2 respectively p=0.007, p=0.01, p=0.01 .CONCLUSION: Ferritin level is determined lower in newborns who have delivered complicated pregnancies. It is also increase of possibility of iron deficiency anemia in these newborns early term.
