Abstract

The Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), the most comprehensive treaty on nuclear disarmament, emerged in 1968. The purpose of this study is to examine Turkey's involvement in the NPT with its causes and effects. Turkey signed the treaty in 1969 in the status of "non-nuclear-weapon state", but ratified it in 1980. By participating in this treaty, Turkey has acknowledged that it will not develop nuclear weapons and will not obtain such weapons in any way. Turkey has always been a state that supports nuclear disarmament in the direction of the international community. Beside this, nuclear security provided by NATO and Turkey's interest in nuclear energy are the main factors driving Ankara to sign the NPT. Turkey has officially earned the right to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, as it is a party to the treaty. In this context, the nuclear activities that Turkey began before the treaty has continued after its participation in the NPT. On the other hand, as Turkey has committed not to develop nuclear weapons as deterrent forces under its national security policy by participating in this treaty, the nuclear assurances provided by the United States of America through NATO has become the only option for Turkey's nuclear security to deter the nuclear threats.
