Abstract

In this study, it is empirically questioned whether manufacturing trade between Turkey and the European Union (EU-27) has been in line with the arguments of the theory of similarity in preferences, employing balanced panel data from 2007 through 2019 within the framework of the gravity model approach. In this context, export and import models which are in the structure of the augmented gravity model are estimated using the Poisson pseudo maximum likelihood (PPML) method. The estimation results indicate that Turkey and EU-27 trade on manufacturing goods in accordance with the theory of similarity in preferences. Accordingly, it can be deduced that manufacturing trade between Turkey and the EU-27 exhibits the horizontal intra-industry trade characteristic. For this reason, closely monitoring and analyzing how the demand for manufactures directed by the tastes and preferences of EU-27 would change may matter for Turkey's bilateral trade developments.
