Abstract

This study was conducted to explore the perceptions of English language teachers with regard to the English language curriculum (ELC) through metaphors. 59 English language teachers working in the central district of a city located in the Central Anatolia Region participated in this current study. An open-ended questionnaire was applied to the participants to reveal their perceptions about the ELC. In the questionnaire teachers were asked to fill in the following sentence: “English language curriculum is like ... because …”. Teachers’ perceptions were analyzed by content analysis. Data analysis showed that teachers produced 54 metaphors about ELC. The most frequently uttered metaphors were “life, a road to the goal, a skeleton and food”. The metaphors produced by the teachers were found to fall into 9 categories; these were the curriculum as essential/necessary, the curriculum as a systematic structure, the curriculum as a tool/vehicle, the curriculum as a resource, the curriculum as a guide, the curriculum as a development, the curriculum as a structure that offers diversity, the curriculum as an unstable and constantly changing structure, and the curriculum seen as useless.
