Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine the auditory and visual rhythm perceptions of conservatory dance and music students. A total of 40 students from Gaziantep University Turkish Music State Conservatory Turkish Music (n=20, %50) and Turkish Folk Dance Department (n=20, %50) participated in the study. Test questions and images developed by the researcher and approved by five experts were used to measure the success of the participants in their visual and auditory rhythm perceptions. To determine whether the data obtained from the participants meet the normal distribution assumptions, normality analysis of the data was performed, and it was determined that the data were normally distributed. To determine the difference between the visual and auditory rhythm perceptions of the participants, the Independent Sample T test, which is a parametric test, was performed. As a result of the results, while there was no statistically significant difference in the visual and auditory rhythm perceptions of the participants according to the gender variable, significant differences were found between the groups according to the class and department variable. The most remarkable finding obtained from the research is that the visual rhythm perception is better in the students studying in the Turkish Folk Dance Department and the auditory rhythm perception is better in the students studying in the Turkish Music Department. According to this result, it was revealed that the content of the education created a significant difference in the visual and auditory rhythm perception of the students.
