Abstract

Photography is a means of seeing change and preserving the image of the lost. These qualities of photography have always made it a concept associated with memory. Humanity has built the memory of its own journeys through photography from past to present. In the 21st century we live in, however, the relationship of digital photography with memory has become debatable once again within the control possibilities of the users. Photography, which is seen as the carrier of memory, has turned into a form of communication in social networks. The relationship between photography and memory has been transformed in the digital age; The idea that photography has now turned into a practice used by users to build certain impressions has come to the fore. In this research, throwback-based posts presented as nostalgic memory experiences on social media are discussed through the #20liyaslarchallenge movement. As a result of the semiotic analysis carried out, it was determined that 43 of the 428 shares accessed through the relevant hashtag on Instagram serve to spread certain impressions of the users over the past. It has been revealed that nostalgic photographs build certain impressions when shared on social media, and their meaning is restructured within today's limits.
