Abstract

Violence is a global problem that humanity cannot put an end to and that must be addressed on a sociological basis. Psychological violence, as a type of violence, is associated with gender inequality and objectification theory in this study. Stereotypes based on gender inequality are produced through sources such as family, culture and media; in a society based on gender inequality, especially the female body and identity are objectified. The concept of body shaming, which is a final result of objectification theory, is when a person starts to define themselves or the people around them as “flawed” or “deficient” due to their physical characteristics when they think they do not “fit” the standards of beauty. This study aims to reveal the situation of body shaming, also known as “body shaming”, which is a type of psychological violence in virtual environments as a subheading of objectification theory. In the study conducted, an Instagram account named @estetiklendiniz, which shares before and after photos of well-known people and asks users to evaluate them, was determined as the sample of the research. In the study where user comments on the three posts shared on the relevant account between 27.08.2022 and 31.08.2022 and received the most likes and comments were taken as a sample in line with the criterion sample, the qualitative content analysis method was applied using the MAXQDA program and the body shaming situation was analyzed. As a result of the research, it was revealed that social media provides an environment suitable for body shaming and that body shaming on social media mostly occurs in the form of remote criticism.
