Abstract

The North Anatolian fault System, about 1100 km long, is a recent dextral transcurrent fault, It has been made up by several parts which are arranged in a crushed zone of 500 - 1000-meter width. Numerous offset stream channels, shutter ridges, sag ponds, hot springs, travertines, and young volcanic cones mark this zone. During the catastrophic earthquakes of the last thirty years the lengths and displacements ofthe fault Segments have been observed and measured on the field. Dislocations have been found to be 0.5-1.5 m in vertical, and 1.5-4.3 m in horizontal direction. The North Anatolian fault movement has begun in Quaternary or in Pliocene time, and caused a displacement of 800-1000 m during the former, and a few kilometers during the latter period. Thus, the author of this article does not share the views of Pavoni (1961), where he states a displacement of 300-400 km along the fault line, because his arguments on the matter can not be proved by geological facts. This theme will be discussed in detail in the following article.
