Abstract

Datura stramonium is a hallucinogenic herb, a member of the belladonna alkaloid family. When taken in large amounts, it can cause hallucinations, agitation and delirium. Generally, cigarettes prepared from the dried leaves are used for the treatment of asthma and bronchitis, while the seeds are taken orally for the treatment of acne, eczema, hemorrhoids and for antispasmodic purposes. It can cause fatal anticholinergic poisoning as a result of unconscious use for treatment, accidental use as food or abuse to benefit from hallucinogen effects. In this article, a child patient who was brought to the hospital with skin rash and delirium after eating a stuffed meal made from Datura stramonium leaves and diagnosed with Datura stramonium poisoning was presented. The intake of toxic drugs, substances, and herbs should be questioned whose in the medical history of patients presenting with delirium or anticholinergic findings of unknown origin.
