Abstract

This present comparative case study aimed to compare two science teachers, one monologic (teacher-centered) and one dialogic (student-teacher, student-student interactional), in terms of the several variables regarding conceptual teaching. For this purpose, the video recordings of nine science teachers working in the same middle school in Bursa were analyzed and evaluated in terms of discourse quality. At the end of this stage, one monologic and one dialogic teacher was selected, and the videos of these teachers were analyzed in detail in terms of three parameters: 1. Conceptual teaching sequence, 2. Conceptual teaching frameworks, 3. Language-oriented conceptual expansion. The results showed that there were differences between the monologic and dialogic teacher and that the dialogic teacher conducted more effective conceptual teaching when compared to the monologic one.
