Abstract

Banana is widely grown in tropical as well as subtropical areas and it is cultivated throughout the Mediterranean cost of Turkey. Nematodes are one of the most important parasites of banana. This study was carried out to determine nematode species, their distribution and infection rate in banana plantations of Antalya, Mersin and Hatay provinces. The root and soils samples collected from the plantations were analyzed with improved Baermann-funnel method. The results showed that Helicotylenchus spp. and Meloidogyne spp. species were present. Both the percentage of infected area and population density of Helicotylenchus spp. was higher than Meloidogyne spp. The total nematode presence (Helicotylenchus spp. + Meloidogyne spp.) measured in August was higher than in May. The 62% of the root samples collected in August carried more than 2500 nematodes / 100 g soil. The presence and amount of nematodes between soil and root samples correlated well. Results demonstrate that nematodes causes yield losses through damaging the infected roots. Taking banana nematode populations into considerations, new methods should be developed to reduce nematode damage to banana production
