Abstract

Climate change, decline in biodiversity, COVID-19 pandemic, epidemics and natural disasters, antibiotic resistance, rapid urbanization, physical and mental environment pollution, problems in access to safe water and food, armed confl icts and other man-made disasters, poverty, increasing inequalities, racism and other forms of discrimination, increase in forced migration, substance use disorders, technology addiction, decrease in physical activity, and increased prevalance of obesity and noncommunicable diseases are among the main global health challenges of today. All of these challenges, which need to be overcome with collaboration at the local, national, regional and global levels, are strongly linked to mental health; however, these linkages are usually overlooked by policy and decision makers despite the fact that the holistic approach emhasizes physical, mental and social components of health. Prevention of mental disorders and promotion of mental health at the population level require multisectoral policies and interventions at a higher level than mental health services provided at the individual level and beyond the health systems, institutions and human resources for mental health. Therefore, more research is needed about the links between mental health and causes, impacts and solutions of global health problems, and more advocacy is needed for mental heath policies at the community and global levels. In addition, converting theory into practice is critical for principles of international frameworks such as “Sustainable Development Goals” and “Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion” to be refl ected in each country’s policies, regulations and practices, and for promotion of mental health at the population level.
